Ko te Pukaki Restoration project

Location: East Auckland
Availability: Weekdays
Team size: 5 - 30

Description:

This restoration project is run by a Marae-based organisation whose vision is to return 35 hectares of its land at Bastion Point back to ngahere (its original state of forest). Over the last 10 years more than 140,000 trees have been planted which has changed the ecological environment for flora and fauna. While 10 years ago the vast land overlooking the Waitemata Harbour was void of birds, now there are pukeko happily walking around and tui singing in the trees.

Your team might be helping in the nursery to plant seedlings, in the vege gardens digging and planting, or weeding, mulching and planting trees on the land. A special aspect of this project is being greeted with a Mihi Whakatau, followed by a Hikoi and Kerero (walk and talk about the area) including the local history and culture of the area. So sign your team up to help restore this area to lush native bush for everyone in the community to enjoy.

Our whole team had a wonderful experience. We were very warmly welcomed at the Marae and had a wonderful introduction as to what the purpose of the restoration project is and how it fits into the wider plans for the area.
We enjoyed working together as a team outdoors and being able to do something positive for the natural environment.
