Gardening Therapy for Riding Therapy

Location: Mangere Bridge

Team size: 5 - 20

Description:

This organisation provides riding therapy with a difference, where horses help improve the lives of children, adolescents and adults with physical, emotional, psychological and intellectual disabilities. The horses' regular rhythmical movement enables therapists to work with riders to develop mobility, muscle control and deal with behaviour difficulties.

The riding centre was established more than 30 years ago for people with disabilities and has since developed a range of services including a secondary school, a vocational training programme for adults and courses for part-time riders. Of course, the riding school’s work could not be done without its herd of wonderful horses (there are around 27 horses on site).

Come and help with your team to keep the centre environment looking inviting, by getting involved in gardening, tidying and sprucing up the grounds. Your team may be weeding, digging, mulching or helping with general maintenance. Any time spent on maintaining the grounds means time away for the centre's staff from their core work, so your help is very much appreciated. And of course you will get to meet the horses as well.

A positive aspect was seeing the work that the organisation does in the community and being a small part of it.
We felt like what we were doing was making a difference.
