Awesome Motuihe Island Care (mid week trips)

Availability: Mid week on booking through Volunteering Auckland. Trips use a private charter vessel and can be arranged to suit the volunteer group (there is a return fee of $45pp approx)

Description:

Motuihe Island is an island paradise situated in the Hauraki Gulf, only 30 minutes ferry trip from Auckland's CBD. This charity is committed to the transformation of the island from farmland to the restoration of a unique ecological environment where native birds can be seen in their natural habitat, close to the white sandy beaches. Motuihe Island now thrives with native New Zealand flora and fauna; home to the spotted kiwi, saddleback, bell bird, dotterel, gecko, tuatara and other rare and endangered birds.

Teams coming to Motuihe Island will spend the day helping with conservation activities which maintain the habitat. Tasks include tree planting, weeding, nursery activities such as potting plants, seed collection and general conservation maintenance and activities. The volunteer coordinators are very knowledgeable and teams gain an insight into the ongoing work which has returned New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna to the island.

The organisation by the volunteers from The Motuihe Project was great. Their instructions were clear and concise. There was a shared sense of achievement from the hard work we did on the day.
We enjoyed getting outdoors and helping out. The staff were very helpful which made things much easier. It gave everyone a great sense of achievement by planting and weeding.
It was great to spend the day outdoors and help this dedicated team of trustees whose passion it is to look after the island and its vegetation. They were our inspiration.
