Description:
Friends of Oakley Creek would love some extra help to restore the tidal reaches of our awa. The Waterview Heritage Area is a fascinating place with historical remains including middens, early living platforms, one of Aucklands' first flour mills, a tannery and a basalt quarry. Flanked by the northwestern cycleway, the area has recently been upgraded with loop tracks allowing access to key areas with interpretive panels explaining the area's significance to Maori and later settlers. Oakley Creek flows for 14km before reaching the site and emptying beyond it into the Motu Manawa Marine Reserve. Upstream the creek provides habitat for special species such as torrent fish and kereru. We are working hard with our volunteers to control the exotic weeds such as privet trees, monkey and madeira vine which threaten to take over the native bush, and historical remains. Planting the area up with natives will extend this important green corridor for both people and wildlife to enjoy.
Teams will control a range of weed tree species and exotic vines. Depending on the time of year, activities will include tree planting and mulching to keep the young plants moist and weed free. We can tailor a day for your team (could be a half day or a full day) which will be physical but fun, with great environmental outcomes.
We run sessions for teams from lots of different walks of life and we enjoy sharing our local and environmental knowledge, whilst working alongside you.
