Litter Busting on Oakley Creek

Location: Waterview
Availability: Any day on booking through Volunteering Auckland
Team size: 5 - 10

Description:

Oakley Creek, Auaunga flows for 15km through Tāmaki-makaurau before spilling into the Motu Manawa Marine Reserve. It is is home to the only waterfall in the isthmus and a wide variety of flora and fauna. There is a fantastic network of paths, greenspace and reserves along its length. This charity would love your help to restore this important green corridor. The group is made up of local people who love their neighbourhood but need an extra injection of energy from corporate groups to keep on top of restoration activities.

The awa is a popular walking and cycling route which brings with it a certain amount of litter, particularly from single use food and drink containers. High water surges after high rainfall events also result in rubbish collecting in certain areas which must be pulled out before it becomes a threat to wildlife. Science on microplastics (which our rubbish will ultimately become) is flagging that this is an emerging threat to human health as well as broader biodiversity. You can be certain that engaging in this activity is a good use of your volunteering time.
We work with lots of teams from different walks of life and we enjoy sharing our local and environmental knowledge with whilst greatly appreciating the contribution made to our local project. We can tailor a day for your team (could be a half day or a full day) which will be physical but fun, with great environmental outcomes.
