Nurture our Native Bush around Oakley Creek

Location: Waterview
Availability: Any day on booking through Volunteering Auckland
Team size: 5 - 10

Description:

Oakley Creek, Auaunga flows for 15km through Tāmaki-makaurau before emptying into the Motu Manawa Marine Reserve. It is home to the only waterfall on the isthmus and a wide variety of flora and fauna, particularly within its rare remnant mahoe rock forest habitats. We have 50 hectares of greenspace and a fantastic network of paths and reserves along the length of our awa. Ngā Ringa o Te Auaunga, Friends of Oakley Creek would love your help to restore this green corridor. Our grassroots group is made up of local people who love their neighbourhood, but need an extra injection of energy from corporate groups to keep on top of restoration activities.

Young native plants are threatened by invasive vines such as blue morning glory. Exotic ground covers such as wandering willy can outcompete native seedlings if left uncontrolled. Fast growing trees such as the Australian brush wattle will quickly form a canopy and replace our slower growing native trees unless they are ring barked. We need help controlling these invasive weeds to ensure our young plantings thrive. Volunteer sessions may also include spreading woodchip mulch to suppress weeds, provide additional nutrients and maintain moisture in newly planted areas to keep them in great health.

We work with lots of teams from different walks of life and we enjoy sharing our local and environmental knowledge, whilst greatly appreciating the contribution made to our project. We can tailor a day for your team (could be a half day or a full day) which will be physical but fun, with great environmental outcomes.
