Native Tree Planting on Oakley Creek, Auaunga

Location: Waterview
Availability: Any day on booking through Volunteering Auckland
Team size: 5 - 10

Description:

Oakley Creek, Auaunga flows for 15km through Tāmaki-makaurau before spilling into the Motu Manawa Marine Reserve. It is is home to the only waterfall in the isthmus and a wide variety of flora and fauna. There is a fantastic network of paths and reserves along its length which add up to 50 hectares of greenspace. Ngā Ringa o Te Auaunga, Friends of Oakley Creek would love your help to restore this important green corridor. The group is made up of local people who love our neighbourhood but need an extra injection of energy from corporate groups to keep up with our planting targets.

We have our own nursery and grow 3,000 plants each year from seed. These plants help stabilise the riverbank, provide shade which cools the creek for native fish, store carbon, and provide food for native birds. We’d love your help with this activity in late autumn and winter when the soil is wet, easy to dig, and plant survival will be the highest.

We work with lots of teams from different walks of life and we enjoy sharing our local and environmental knowledge, whilst greatly appreciating the contribution made to our project. We can tailor a day for your team (could be a half day or a full day) which will be physical but fun, with great environmental outcomes.
