Location: Waiheke Island
Availability: Flexible on booking through Volunteering Auckland. For teams we can try and accommodate any day of the week.
Team size: 4 - 50
Description:
With 4000 native trees to plant this season we're looking for lots of volunteers! Most of our planting sessions are in the Onetangi Forest & Bird, reserve. The planting site is a 5 minute walk from the road and drop-off point. The planting site is an ex-horse paddock so a clear open space to work.
There are no toilets facilities nearby so it's recommended to use them at the Matiatia wharf upon arrival at Waiheke.
Your shoes will sprayed with 70% methylated spirits - 30% water and any soil brushed off upon arrival to prevent kauri disease establishing on Waiheke.
I will give people a planting demonstration prior to beginning. You will be digging into soft soil and creating a hole about 20cm deep and 20cm wide then removing the native trees from their small planter bags, placing them in the ground and filling the soil back in. If digging is not possible for some people then 'tag-teaming' is an alternative where one person digs holes and another plants and back-fills. Others can also wheelbarrow plants or carry and stake-in bamboo marker pegs. With your help hopefully we can plant out a good block of the section together.
COSTS: Your team will need to catch the passenger ferry (preferably 9am) from Downtown Auckland to Matiatia, Waiheke Island. The return ferry with Fullers to Waiheke costs $55 per person.
On arrival to Waiheke you will need to have organised a shuttle bus/taxi with one of our transport providers, depending on the size of your group. There are various shuttle bus providers on Waiheke you can search for online. For example Waiheke Transport charges $28.75 per person return, to the site. This is the junction of Trig Hill rd and Woollams rd, Onetangi. I can also take four people in my car if needed.
TIMING: For teams we can try and accommodate you any day of the week. We'll aim for your session to run from 10:30am-3:15pm with a lunch-break in-between. Timing can be adjusted depending on the needs of your group although this is timing generally works.
There are many vineyards along the way as well if your team would like to relax there after planting.
