This organisation runs diverse projects and programmes including education, environmental restoration, youth empowerment, community fitness and neighbourhood development. Their vision is: “Confident communities ready to create and initiate opportunities.”
This project involves teams helping to divert waste from the landfill at the Waitakere Refuse and Recycling Centre in Henderson. From building materials to a range of household and furniture items, much of what Aucklanders throw away, is given a new life. This includes turning old pallets into outdoor furniture which is then sold at the Recycle Shop.
This project will give you an opportunity to learn how a community recycling centre operates, at the same time as doing some good for the environment by making sure fewer items end up in the landfill and more trash is turned into treasure for future use.
Tasks include sorting through the items discarded to creatively spot valuable items to up-cycle for another purpose. Indoor building jobs are available during the winter months.
This role requires a reasonable level of fitness as you will be on your feet for most of the day however there will be no heavy lifting involved.
There may be some use of hand tools for those who feel confident to do so and there is opportunity to get creative and turn trash into functional items if your team are willing to take up the challenge. (This would need to be discussed with the coordinator before the volunteer day).
This is a volunteering environment suited to groups of small teams in different areas of the shop rather than large groups working on a single task together.
By participating in this volunteering opportunity you are helping achieve the following United Nations Sustainability Goals ;
Goal 3 - Good health and well-being
